EIGHT to FIVE

WEEK 7:
And here it is; the end of the second to last week of this amazing learning experience. This week was very slow on Monday and Tuesday involved doing a lot of school work which was nice because i was able to do a lot of research for my blog posts and get my paper almost finished. Just when i thought i did not have anything left to do i was was given the opportunity to help with more projects. I got to help with the material boards for a presentation that is happening at the beginning of the august and then once that was finished i got the chance to work with one of the architects on a big project and helped them get the sheets ready. It was 18 different buildings in 8 hours. It was a little on the stressful side but it was a lot of fun getting to work with different people in order to get the job done on time.

WEEK 6:
This week involved more office work then the previous weeks. I helped clean out old files and do some printing jobs for project binders. Before i was handed these jobs everyone would start off by saying "I have a a job you can do if you are not busy, it is nothing fun...". To me doing anything in this kind of office setting is fun and interesting and is always another opportunity to see another aspect of how the business works.

Now there are only two weeks left and if they go by as fast as the past 6 it will be here a lot sooner then i want it to be.

WEEK 5:
Another week has come to an end (unfortunately). Which means that now I only have 3 weeks left. I can’t believe how fast this summer has gone by.
This week I thought was going to be really slow, because Monday and Tuesday where wrap up projects and wait for the next step kind of days. This means there was lots of time to do research and work on school projects. Which was good, but by the time Wednesday came around there was plenty to do again with a totally different project. This new project also brought a new task with it. This was a flooring pattern with VCT tiles in the main entrance of the school. It involved doing research to find out the school colors and being able to apply them to a tiles pattern. It was a fun project and took me the entire day to do. Even though it seems like a really simple task, for me it was a good experience. It was the first time I had to get that involved with a flooring pattern and I was really proud of the end result.

On Thursday it was another busy day, but going back to another project from one of the restaurants from the beginning of the summer. This time it was making window treatment drawings on the floor plan. In all the projects  I have done for school I have never put window treatments into one. It was a brand new experience and it was really interesting the different things that were done in each room depending on what they were used for and what room they were located in in the building. The rooms on the west side of the restaurant where the private dining rooms that are used for presentations at times. So these rooms needed a few different kinds of window treatments to block out the sun and the ones on the east side that where just used for dining purposes did not need any kind of heavy duty, or blackout curtains.

Week 4:
With all the excitement of every thing that has been going on with my internship i did not even realize that the summer was almost over with until someone asked my how much longer i was going to be around. I am upset that i will not be here to finish some of these really cool projects that i have been able to be a part of. This week was a lot fun i got to be the designer for a project proposal that is going to be shown to a client next week. I got to be in charge of the furniture layouts (with some help of course ;)). i got to go a step further this week with this project by getting to make the rendered perspective in Revit and photoshop. I also got a cheat sheet for keyboard short cuts and scale sizes for AutoCAD. These have come in very handy and i wish I had gotten this a long time ago.

That's it for this week it has been a little slow at the moment, but that just gives me time to work on other things that I need to do for school.

Week 3:
I can not believe that week 3 has already come and gone. There is so much happening during these weeks that they go by in the blink of an eye.
This week was the week for specifications sheets. It is not just a sheet, though, it is an entire book filled with all the information on all the furniture and fabrics that will be used on the space it also has samples, tag numbers, pricing and lead time quotes, and all the information that tells you what fabrics belong on what furniture and where that furniture belongs. Organization is definitely the key in this line of work. It was also something I thought I was good at, but I still have a lot to learn in that department.

I also got to work on some furniture layouts for some current projects and some project proposals. It was fun, but it always took many tries to get something that could start to work perfectly and then more tries after that.

I know that I have definitely picked the right line of work, because even the things that happen that most people would complain are to difficult to deal with I just sit back and embrace the challenge. Everything task I get to do is so much fun and I always learn so much everyday.
I have learned that it is good to be able to relay your ideas to your client. I have also gotten more familiar with AutoCAD, which is nice after working with Revit for the past year. I feel like I am becoming more well rounded with multiple programs. If I have been able to do all of this in the first week I can not wait to see all what I am going to learn throughout the summer.

Week 2:
I cannot believe the second week is already over. The duties of this week where not quit as hectic as last week, but that just left even more time for learning that much more.
Monday started off with packing up all the boards and presentation materials to ship them out to the meeting. If you think it is nerve racking to adhere samples to a board to transport it yourself try packaging them up to ship via mail career. The samples and boards all made it to the meeting in one piece to my relief. The rest of the week slowed down after that. That is where I learned that projects move slowly at different stages and then speed up and slow back down again.
Most of the work I did this week involved straightening up after last week so that we could move on to the next phase of the project. And at the same time do some work on another project that was getting towards its next phase.  This involved getting in touch with sales reps to gather information about the materials being used in the actual project. This step involves making lots of phone calls and sending out emails, which might seem like nothing, but it is all part of the process of getting the job done. It is really interesting to see how many people are involved in getting to the end product of a project.
Last week allowed me to apply what I had learned in school to help with a project, but this week allowed me to go to the next step. In school we do our projects for grades so it all stops at the paper work. In reality the project does not stop until the entire structure is constructed. That was the lesson of this week, once you have the ideas and the paper work you then follow through with it by making lots of phone calls and sending out emails.
This week I had the job of getting all the information (price estimates and lead time with COM) for a dining chair being used in a restaurant. It was really exciting at the end of the week when all the information came in and the only thing left to do is to order them. That was also for just one of the many chairs being used.
(This is also the part where I get nervous and hopefully all the correct information gets sent out to keep thing running smoothly.)
I am loving every second of this amazing experience!!!!! Can’t wait for week 3!

Week 1:
When starting this internship I really had no idea what to expect. This first week has gone by so fast and I have been able to gain some good experience and apply what I have learned in my education so far. I have gotten to help out with the layouts for schematic designs being shown to a client next week. These designs  have involved, elevations, color boards, and floor plans.
